What Is Compression Molding? From Material to Finished Part
A practical overview of thermoset compression molding, from charge preparation and curing to demolding and inspection. Compression molding places a measured charge into a mold, then uses closing pressure and heat to shape the material. This article focuses on thermoset molding compounds such as sheet molding compound (SMC) and bulk molding compound (BMC). Rubber and thermoplastic compression molding follow different material behavior and should not be assigned the same cure settings. Begin with the part requirements Define the service environment, dimensional tolerances, electrical requirements and planned production volume before selecting a compound. Charge location affects flow distance; the parting line affects flash and appearance; inserts and draft affect reliable release. Record the material batch and storage conditions. A controlled charge mass matters: too little may leave an unfilled feature, while excessive material can increase flash. Close, vent and cure As the mold closes, the charge flows into ribs, around holes and into other details. Air and volatiles need a controlled escape path. Thermoset resin crosslinks as it heats, so the processing window depends on mold temperature distribution, closing motion, pressure and time together. A formed surface does not prove that a thick section has reached its required cure state. Release and inspect After the validated cycle, remove the part and perform the specified trimming, cleaning, optional post-cure and assembly steps. Protect critical electrical surfaces and mating features during finishing. First-article inspection should cover key dimensions, appearance and fit. For production, track batches, settings, cycle history and defect types. Verify functional electrical properties using the tests required by the product specification. Establish settings with the supplier's material data and trials on the actual tool.
